Certified Nurse Aide (CNA)

The Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) works under the supervision of a licensed nurse in adult care homes (nursing homes), hospitals, clinics, and other environments where residents/patients benefit from assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs) to include eating, bathing and personal hygiene, dressing, transferring and repositioning, and mobility.  During the course students develop nursing care skills, demonstrate and understand how to work safely, and develop empathy and appreciation for the person who lives in a long-term care environment. Competencies are evaluated in classroom, lab, and clinical experiences. After completing the course and passing the state test, the student is credentialed as a Certified Nurse Aide in Kansas.  The CNA credential is required for employment as a CNA and is often required for admission to nursing and other professional health care education programs. The course follows the curriculum specified by the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services (KDADS).

Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) Refresher

The Certified Nurse Aide Refresher course is for CNAs who have held the Kansas Certified Nurse Aide certification, but are not active (their certification has lapsed) and want to reactivate their CNA status.  The session includes an assessment of written and oral knowledge as well as discussion and demonstration of CNA skills.  Upon successful completion, KDADS/Health Occupations Credentialing is notified and the certification is reactivated for two years.

Estimated CNA Refresher course cost:  $150.00 fee

Certified Medication Aide (CMA)

The Certified Medication Aide works under the supervision of a licensed nurse in adult care home (nursing home) to administer prescribed medications and selected therapies. The course includes current drug/medication classifications, actions, use, side effects, adverse reactions, interactions, and nursing care for medications used to treat commonly recurring health conditions affecting body systems; administering prescribed medications, monitoring oxygen therapy and applying non-sterile dressings; legal, ethical and current practice; and communication and documentation. Competencies are evaluated during classroom, lab, and clinical experiences. An active CNA credential is required to enroll in the CMA course.  After completing the course and passing the state test, the student is credentialed as a Certified Medication Aide in Kansas.  The course follows the curriculum specified by the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services (KDADS).

Certified Medication Aide Update (CMA Update)

The CMA Update is a 10-clock hour continuing education course required every two years to maintain an active CMA status. Successful completion of the CMA Update course extends CMA certification for an additional two years.  Medication aides must hold current/active certification to be employed as a CMA.  If the certification expires, the medication aide has one year from the date the medication aide certification expired   to take a CMA Update course.  If the course is not taken within one year of the certification expiration date, the entire medication aide course must be retaken.
