Visiting Campus

A scheduled campus visit is the most useful, meaningful thing you can do to help determine if attending one of our programs of study is a good "fit" with your interests, abilities, and goals. In seeing firsthand what we do in our classrooms, shops, and labs, and by visiting with our students and instructors, you will get a feel for how much you will or won't like attending a program of study.

Campus visits are conducted by appointment on most weekdays. It is helpful if you identify specifically which program(s) you want to visit and have several dates and times in mind. Your campus visit may include:

  • Meeting with a Manhattan Tech Student Ambassador and taking a tour across campus, stopping by the programs you are interested in.
  • Speaking with an admissions counselor or advisor regarding the requirements for your program.
  • Gathering information about financial aid and scholarships. 

You are welcome to bring friends and family members along on your campus visit…the more, the merrier!

Things to keep in mind:

  • Arrive in time to park.
  • You will meet up with your Manhattan Tech Student Ambassador in the front office. The front office is located at the entrance of the main building of the college and immediately to your left.
  • Have questions to ask your Ambassador and admissions. It is best to write these questions down and bring them with you.

1. APPLICATION  Complete and submit your admission application Apply Now!

  • Allow five business days for processing. Once the application is processed you will receive a letter detailing the next steps in the process.



2. TRANSCRIPTS  Submit official transcripts/GED


  • Be sure to send us official copies of transcripts from all institutions (high school included) attended prior to Manhattan Tech. Official transcripts can be dropped off at the office, or can be mailed to: Manhattan Area Technical College, 3136 Dickens Ave., Manhattan, Kansas 66503



3. TEST/ASSESSMENT  Schedule an appointment to take the COMPASS Assessment, if applicable.


  • We use the COMPASS assessment for placement into Math and English courses. If you have taken the ACT or college level Math/English classes you may not need to take the COMPASS. 4. FINANCIAL AID  Complete the FAFSA form.


  • Financial aid is available in the form of grants, loans and work study. To be considered for federal and state financial aid programs, complete and submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). You can submit the FAFSA online through the Department of Education’s site: Manhattan Tech’s school code is 005500.





  • Students are required to attend New Student Orientation and Convocation activities.  During these activities, faculty and staff provide vital information that will help students make a successful transition to Manhattan Area Technical College, including: Manhattan Tech Policies and Procedures, Program Course Schedules, Performance Expectations, Tools/Equipment/Uniforms/Textbooks.





  • Tuition is due at Final Registration & Fee Payment day which is held the week before classes begin



Please be aware that Manhattan Area Technical College is not currently SEVP-certified and cannot offer student visas for international students.

  • Does MATC have student housing or "dorms"?

    No. MATC does not offer student housing or dorms. However, we are able to offer you listings of property management companies to help your search.

    University Crossing, located a short distance from MATC, offers fully furnished apartments for students and a roommate matching program.  You even get a reduced rental rate, just for being an MATC student! Check them out at!

  • Does MATC have childcare available?

    No, MATC does not provide childcare. However, we can provide students with a list of local daycare/preschool centers.

  • How early do programs at MATC fill up?

    Most of our programs fill about 6 months prior to the next program start date, so it is always a good idea to get your application in 6-12 months before your desired start date or even earlier if possible. Some of our most in demand programs like Air Conditioning & Refrigeration and Auto Technology tend to fill the quickest. Currently those who apply to our Electric Power & Distribution are on the waiting list for about 2 years.

  • How early can I apply for admission?

    As early as you would like! If you are not age 18 or older when you apply, you will need a parent/guardian signature on your application. We frequently receive applications from applicants 2-3 years before they plan to begin their studies at MATC, so it is never too early to apply.

  • Does MATC offer job placement?

    Yes. Although we cannot "guarantee" you will land the ideal job, we can meet you halfway on your quest for it. As an MATC student, you will receive instruction and assistance in all aspects of your job search, including resume/cover letter preparation, researching prospective employers, and interviewing. We have an extensive network of area employers who routinely look to MATC first when hiring new employees. If you complete your program of study, and if you are somewhat flexible as to where you go to work and what type of company/business you want work for, we average better than 90% placement of our graduates.

  • Do I need a high school diploma or GED to attend MATC?

    No, we do not require any of our students to have a high school diploma or GED to attend any of our certificate programs of study (except for nursing). Students wishing to enroll in an A.A.S. degree program must have a high school diploma or GED. Also, you are only eligible for federal financial aid and a degree or certificate if you have earned a high school diploma or GED.

  • Does MATC require the ACT/SAT exam before I can be admitted?

    We do not need these scores for admission. We can use your ACT or SAT scores for placement in your math and writing courses if you have already taken one of those assessments, however, you are not required to complete the ACT or SAT.  The majority of our programs do require you to take a COMPASS test. These scores are not used for admission, but for placement in math an english courses. MATC offers the COMPASS test on-site at no cost. We must have scores on file in order to enroll you in your courses.

  • Does MATC require entrance exams?

    If you are looking into one of our allied health programs, it is best to check with the admissions office regarding the required criteria. The majority of our programs do not require entrance exams.

  • I would consider myself to be an "older" student, not right out of high school…will I be out of place going to college with all of these kids?

    Absolutely NOT! About half of our student body is made up of students age 21 or younger, but every semester we have students in their 30s, 40s, 50s, and older. All adult learners are welcome on our campus.

  • I'm not sure if I want to earn a one-year technical certificate or a two-year associate degree. Which is better?

    It depends on your program of study.
    In Air Conditioning & Refrigeration, Automotive Collision Repair, Building Trades, Business & Computer Technology, Electric Power and Distribution, Practical Nursing, and Welding Technology, graduates are very employable for entry-level jobs with only a one-year certificate. That being said, having an associate degree in these programs can make you more promotable and give you a "leg up" on other job applicants who only have a certificate. In Associate Degree Nursing, Automotive Technology, Computer-Aided Drafting Technology, and Information Technology, the associate degree is the minimum requirement for an entry-level job.

  • What if I earn a one-year technical certificate now but later decide that I want to earn an associate degree?

    No problem! Our graduates have 5 years from the date they graduate with a technical certificate to earn the additional courses required for an associate degree. MATC grads can return at any time to continue coursework for their degrees.

  • Can I transfer in courses taken at another institution?

    Absolutely! The only limitations on transfer credit are (1) the course(s) must be equivalent courses to those offered at MATC and taken from a regionally-accredited college/university as recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, and (2) only courses with a grade of C or better will transfer. Simply have the institution(s) where the other courses are completed send an official transcript to MATC for evaluation.

  • Will MATC courses transfer to another college or university?

    Maybe! It is always up to the receiving institution how credits will transfer. If you plan to transfer to another institution after completing your studies at MATC, you should check with that institution to see how your MATC courses will transfer.

  • I wasn't the best at "bookwork" the last time I was in school, but I did very well in "hands-on" courses. Does that mean I will do better at MATC than I did at my last school or college?

    That all depends on YOU! Although many of our programs are structured around lab, shop, clinical, and "hands on" activities, there are still lectures, reading assignments, and quizzes/tests. Experience has shown that 3 factors above all others determine a student's failure or success: attendance, interest and determination.

    It may seem obvious, but those students who regularly attend classes and actively participate in activities will succeed at a higher rate than those who do not, regardless of ability. Writer/producer Woody Allen once said, "90 percent of success is just showing up!"

    Likewise, the students who are legitimately interested in their programs and enjoy what they are doing find it easier to study, learn and participate. When students enter a program of study only for the money they expect to make once they graduate or because someone else talked them into enrolling, they often "fizzle out" and tell us "my heart just isn't in this."

    Many students who in their own words were "poor students" in high school or college before have enrolled at MATC, worked very hard, and ended up graduating at the top of their classes! Conversely, many students with outstanding ability have enrolled at MATC and either quit or failed all of their courses due to poor attendance, interest, determination, or all of the above. Will you be successful at MATC? That's entirely up to you.

  • I'm still not sure about signing up. What else can I do to help me decide?

    Schedule a campus visit, research the occupation on the Internet, talk to someone who works in your field of interest…but by all means, don't be afraid to ask for help! We would love to have you as a student on our campus if that matches with your interests and goals. Please contact us with any questions you may have.

Manhattan Area Technical College is not authorized by the U.S. Department of Justice to complete Immigration and Naturalization Service paperwork for students seeking admission through a student visa. 

EPD program Orienation day is for you to learn more about your program at Manhattan Area Technical College and enroll in classes. Guests are welcome to attend with you. Your scheduled orientation and enrollment day is: October 30th (Please RSVP on the form below!)

Vendor for belt fitting will be available on Orientation day and students will be expected to have their tools by the first day of class. Please remember to bring cash or check of $500 in order to be fitted for your belts. Students work with tool vendors directly to order and purchase tools.


To enroll in certain general education math and writing courses at MATC a COMPASS® Placement Assessment may be required.  Additionally, some MATC programs require qualifying entrance tests as part of their enrollment requirements. The tests currently offered at MATC are the ATI - TEAS for Nursing Students for our Licensed Practical Nursing program, the ATI - TEAS for Allied Health for our Dental Hygiene Program, and the ATI - Comprehensive Predictor for our Degree Nursing program. MATC also offers a CASAS Reading Assessment for several continuing education courses.

COMPASS® is an adaptive web-based placement assessment test used for placement into MATC general education courses.  It specifically assesses student placement into general education math and writing courses. 

Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • COMPASS® assessments are untimed
  • COMPASS® assessments should be scheduled in advance
  • You will be supplied pencil, paper, and a calculator
  • Yes, you can retake any part of the COMPASS® assessments
  • Yes, there is a retesting fee
  • Your score report will be ready immediately after completion

MATC is happy to COMPASS® test you for another institution.  A fee between $10 - $25 may apply for COMPASS® assessments and is payable prior to testing.  Contact us to determine if a fee applies to you.  To request your COMPASS® report be sent to another institution complete a MATC transcript request form and submit it to the Student Affairs office.  

MATC is also a COMPASS® remote testing site.


COMPASS® tests can be scheduled regularly on Tuesdays at 9:00am and Thursdays at 4:00pm.  There are walk-ins available some Fridays between 9:00am and 11:00am.  Please contact us to schedule or to see when a walk-in is available.

The Test of Essential Academic Skills Version V (TEAS for Nursing Students) is a requirement for entry into the Practical Nursing program at MATC.  Registration for the TEAS for Nursing Students test is via the ATI testing website at  Students need to register on the ATI website in order to pay and reserve a testing spot.  Study guides may provide help with exam preparation.  Study guides are available for purchase at  TEAS scores are one piece of information used to rank applicants for admission.  Two TEAS version V attempts will be the maximum considered, and one of the attempts must be made through MATC. The highest score will be used when ranking applicants.

The TEAS for Allied Health is a requirement for entry into the Dental Hygiene program at MATC. The test must have been taken within five (5) years of applying to the program and scores will be utilized as part of the selection process. The cost of the TEAS for Allied Health is $55. The PN Comprehensive Predictor exam Version 2011 is a requirement for entry into the Associate Degree Nursing program at MATC. Any NCLEX-PN study guide may be used to prepare for the exam. Testing spaces are limited.  The test can be scheduled through the MATC Office of Admissions at (785) 587-2800, Ext. O.

Prior to enrollment in a CNA/CMA course, prospective students must complete a CASAS reading test. This test is offered at MATC and a $10.00 fee may apply. Students must sign up for the test ahead of time by calling MATC at (785) 587-2800, Ext 0.  Even if you aren't sure when you might actually enroll in a CNA class, we advise you to complete this assessment so you will be ready to enroll as new classes are opened.

SCHEDULE: 2015 - 2016

CASAS tests are scheduled regulary on Mondays and Wednesdays throughout the year.  Tests can be scheduled starting at 2:00pm on designated days.  To check availabilty of upcoming CASAS testing sessions contact MATC at (785) 587-2800, Ext. 0.

Title IV Federal Aid Available at MATC


Federal Pell Grant - A need-based grant program for students who have not earned a Bachelor's degree. A student's eligibility is determined by their enrollment status and their Expected Family Contribution (EFC). The EFC is determined by the completion of the FAFSA. Awards range from $555 - $5550 per academic year.

Federal Supplemental Opportunity Grant (SEOG) - A need-based grant program for students giving priority to students eligible for Federal Pell Grant who have not earned a Bachelor's degree. Awards at MATC range between $100 - $500 and are equally disbursed between the fall and spring semester.

Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG) - A need-based grant program available to first and second year students who has successfully completed a state-approved rigorous high school curriculum, is eligible for a Pell grant, is a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen, is enrolled at least half-time (at least 6 credit hours per semester), has completed high school after January 1, 2006 for first year recipients and after January 1, 2005 for second year recipients, and maintain a 3.0 GPA. The first year ACG amount is $750. The second year ACG amount is $1,300. To receive the second year ACG, a student must have completed at least 24 credit hours and have a 3.0 GPA.

Federal Work Study (FWS) - A program that provides jobs for students with financial need. Students are placed in specific jobs on campus. Students are allowed to work a maximum of 20 hours per week at $7.00 per hour. Students are paid according to MATC payroll procedures. Check with the financial aid office for eligibility or submit the work study application.

Federal Stafford Student Loans - A low interest loan program available to both students and their parents. Stafford student loans consist of subsidized and unsubsidized loans. A dependent student (for the purpose of Title IV Federal financial aid a student is considered dependent if their parent(s) were required to include their information on the FAFSA) can borrow up to $5500 as a freshman and $6500 as a sophomore. An independent student can borrow up to $9500 as a freshman and $10,500 as a sophomore. The amount of subsidized or unsubsidized amounts is determined by the MATC Financial Aid office and is based on the results of the FAFSA, the program cost of attendance and other aid the student is receiving. 

Subsidized Loans - A need-based loan where the interest is paid by the federal government while the student is enrolled at least half time and for a 6 month grace period after leaving school or dropping below half time. Repayment on this loan also begins 6 months after the student leaves school or drops below half time enrollment status. For 2010 -2011 the interest rate is a fixed 4.5%.

Unsubsidized Loans - A non need-based loan where the interest is the responsibility of the student from the time the loan is disbursed until it is paid in full. The student has the option of paying the interest as it accrues or capitalizing it on the loan. Repayment of the loan begins 6 months after the student leaves school or drops below half time. For 2010-2011 the interest rate is a fixed 6.8%.

Parent PLUS Loan- A non need-based loan available to parents and/or step- parents with a good credit history to assist with educational expenses of a dependent student. (For the purpose of Title IV Federal financial aid a student is considered dependent if their parent(s) were required to include their information on the FAFSA). The interest begins to accrue at the time the loan is disbursed and is the responsibility of the parent. Repayment on this loan begins 6 months after the student leaves school or drops below half time enrollment status, and is the responsibility of the parent who took out the loan. For 2010-2011 the interest rate is a fixed 7.9% and loan fees up to 4% may be deducted by the lender and/or guarantor at disbursement. Funds are disbursed in two disbursements, half each semester. Step 2: Review your Student Aid Report (SAR).

You will receive a SAR approximately 3-4 weeks after you complete the FAFSA. Review this information to be sure it is correct. If corrections need to be made, make the corrections on-line at If you have questions concerning your SAR, contact the processor at (800)433-3243.

Step 3: Complete Verification, if selected.

If your application is selected for verification by the processor or by MATC, you must complete a MATC Verification Worksheet, and provide the Federal Income Tax Returns and W-2's of the student and parents, and any other documents requested.

Step 4: The Financial Aid Award Notification.

After all information has been received the award letter will be determined and mailed out to the address given on the FAFSA. The award letter will be based on full time unless otherwise noted. A revised award letter may be generated if hours enrolled drop below full time or as you receive other monetary assistance, such as scholarships and 3rd party sponsors.

To accept your Direct Stafford Student loans, please complete the following steps. Please wait until you have received an award letter before submitting your Loan Amount Request Form.

Parent Plus Loan.

If the parent is denied the parent plus loan, the student will become eligible for an additional unsubsidized loan. Please contact the financial aid office to request the additional money.

Step 5: Disbursement Policy

Any Pell Grant or Stafford loans will automatically be applied to your tuition and fees first. If an over payment occurs, a check will be written to the student for the difference. The business office generally writes checks twice a month, the 11th and 26th. Checks are available at the front desk in the office. Checks can be mailed upon request.

2011-2012 Satisfactory Academic Progress Appeal
This form is necessary for students who did not meet the 2.0 G.P.A, or who did not complete 75% of the classes that they enrolled in and have lost their financial aid eligibility. Please submit this form and any additional required documentation to the financial aid office.

MATC Scholarship Application

Satisfactory Academic Progress
Federal regulations require that financial aid recipients maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) in order to remain eligible for Title IV Federal Financial Aid (Federal Pell Grant, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, Academic Competitiveness Grant, Federal College Work Study, Federal Stafford Student Loans and Federal Parent Loans).

Satisfactory Academic Progress at MATC requires:

  • Cumulative GPA of 2.00 (on a 4.00 scale) or higher for all coursework taken at MATC (including general education courses).
  • Completion of at least 75% of attempted credit hours. For example: If a student attempts 15 credit hours but only completes 9 credit hours, he/she will have only completed 60% of the attempted hours and will not meet SAP guidelines.
  • Maximum hours attempted at MATC (including general education courses) cannot exceed 150% of the published length of the student’s program. For example: Students enrolled in a 40 credit hour technical certificate program may be eligible for Title IV Federal Aid for a maximum of 60 credit hours. Students enrolled in a 62 credit hour associate degree program may be eligible for Title IV Federal Aid for a maximum of 93 credit hours.

At the end of each semester, or when otherwise requested, grades are submitted to MATC Student Services and Satisfactory Academic Progress is determined. All students not meeting SAP are notified in writing that they are not eligible for Title IV Federal Aid for the next semester. Continued unsatisfactory work may be grounds for dismissal from the program.

Title IV Federal Aid can be reinstated when SAP requirements (listed above) are met, or by appeal. In order to appeal, a student must complete the Satisfactory Academic Progress Appeal Form.

A student who has lost Title IV Federal Aid eligibility may still enroll and pay tuition and fee charges from their own resources.

Payment of Tuition, Fees and Other Costs
Tuition and fees are due at the beginning of each semester and are determined by the number of credit hours in which the student is enrolled. A student who has not met this obligation within 10 days after the due date may be dismissed from MATC. This does not apply to students who have financial aid eligibility and plan to use those funds for tuition and fee payment. For those students, payment will be expected from the first financial aid check. All costs for student projects must be paid in full before a project can be removed from MATC’s grounds.

Tuition and Fees Refund Policy
Students enrolled in undergraduate courses may be eligible for a refund of tuition/fees upon official withdrawal from a course or complete withdrawal from MATC. Refunds are calculated based on the day a MATC Drop/Add form is received by the MATC office, not when the student stopped attending class. Failure to attend a class does not constitute official withdrawal. Upon an official withdrawal, tuition/fee refunds will be calculated based on the following guidelines:

  • Received by the 3rd day of the semester = 100% refund of tuition and fees
  • Received by the 7th day of the semester = 80% refund of tuition only
  • Received by the 11th day of the semester = 50% refund of tuition only
    (See calendar for exact dates)

*It is recommended that a student who received financial aid to visit with the financial aid office before dropping a class to discuss any ramifications.

Military-related Refunds
Any Manhattan Area Technical College student who is serving in the National Guard or reserves and is called to active duty during an academic term is entitled to a full refund of tuition and fees for any courses in which the student has not received a grade. Any Manhattan Area Technical College student drafted and required to report for active duty during an academic term is entitled to a full refund of tuition and fees for any courses in which the student has not received a grade. No refund of fees and tuition is due for any classes for which the student is awarded full credit. All refunds are contingent upon verification of status through official military documentation. Any student who volunteers for military service during an academic term will be subject to MATC’s non-military refund policy.

Title IV Funds Refund Policy
Undergraduate students receiving Federal Financial Aid who completely withdraw from Manhattan Area Technical College are also subject to the Department of Education’s Return of Title IV Funds policy. According to the policy a calculation is performed to determine if unearned Federal Student Aid needs to be returned to the Department of Education. The student is responsible for any funds that were required to be returned. A copy of the Return of Title IV Funds policy is available from the MATC Financial Aid Office.

EFC is the Expected Family Contribution level determined by the US Department of Education. In short, EFC reflects the family's ability to pay for college during the award year. It is based on the information provided by the student on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid or confirmed through the verification process. EFC is the sum of the parental contribution (dependent student only) and student contribution. EFC does not reflect what the student or parents may have in "cash on hand" but the amount the family is expected to pay throughout the award year.

Veterans Education Benefits
The Kansas Commission on Veteran's Affairs has approved VA educational benefits for all MATC programs. Veterans, reservists, and eligible dependents requesting benefits must complete the appropriate forms which are available from the Department of Veterans Affairs at 888.442.4551, or online at

Program Description

Our students develop the skills to pay the bills. This program is designed to prepare air conditioning and refrigeration mechanics and apprentices for entry-level employment in a wide range of construction, maintenance, and service positions in business and industry. The program provides instruction in residential air conditioning, commercial air conditioning, heating systems, and commercial refrigeration. Students will be EPA 608 certified.

MATC Automotive Collision Repair Program receives $50,000 Makeover Grant


Program Description

The Automotive Collision Repair Program prepares students with the technical and interpersonal skills required for entry-level employment in the automotive collision repair field.  The Kansas Automotive Collision Core Curriculum that is based on the four NATEF core areas of certification will be delivered using the I-CAR Curriculum, the industry standard. Upon completion of the program, students will be able to apply for up to 10 I-CAR points, a standard that is recognized by automotive collision repair shops in the region. 
This program aligns with the Kansas Board of Regents curriculum.

Program Mission

The mission of the Automotive Technology program is to enhance student learning with quality technical and interpersonal skills for placement and career advancement based on the requirements of the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF).

Program Description

This two-year, four semester program prepares students for an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Automotive Technology. The program provides necessary training to diagnose, test, and repair modern cars and light trucks. Graduates are ready for positions as entry-level automotive technicians, service writers, and with experience, service managers and automotive repair business owners.

The Automotive Technology program at MATC is an Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF) certified program. Students in the program have the option to be certified by the Mobile Air Conditioning Society (MACS) in refrigerant recover/recycling.

MATC has an articulation agreement with Pittsburg State University, Kansas State University, and Fort Hays State University. Through these agreements, students may transfer their MATC credits towards a Bachelor's degree.

This program aligns with the Kansas Board of Regents Curriculum.

The Advanced Biotechnology Certificate Program began in 2010 in response to our region's growing biotechnology industry and is funded through an NSF ATE grant.

Program Description

The Building Trades program offers training in residential and commercial building needed in the workforce today. This training uses the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) curriculum.  Course work includes safety, blueprint reading, tools and materials, framing, interior and exterior finishing, roofing, cabinets, and concrete work. Application and practice of skills is accomplished through the construction of a home within the local area.

The Business Administration Program mission is to “provide a learning atmosphere in which students strengthen their knowledge and skills through quality instruction, up-to-date technology and ongoing application. The program will prepare students for initial employment and advancement in information careers.”

Program Description

The Business Administration program provides students with course options for their chosen business support services career pathway. Students will be able to choose from three options to develop marketable skills in their focused area: accounting, business administrative technology, or medical office administration. Students completing a certificate in one of these areas will enter the workforce ready to meet the needs of the workplace. The A.A.S. degree option provides additional business skills to move into supervisory positions and/or pursue a bachelor's degree at a university.

Program Description

The Computer-Aided Drafting Technology program is a two-year program that prepares students with the skills required to meet industry standards across the United States. Working with engineers, architects, or machinists, drafters help develop CAD plans and drawings for industry. Students will demonstrate competence via a technical portfolio and credentials that will prepare them for success in entry-level, intermediate, and senior positions. The program provides instruction in engineering graphics, architectural design, manufacturing drawing and processes.

CAD Technologies Department is ADDA Curriculum Certified

The CAD Technologies Department is very happy to announce that effective October 3rd, 2014, our curriculum was certified by the American Design Drafting Association (ADDA) for the Drafter Certification.  We are one of only two colleges in the state of Kansas to be certified by the ADDA.  We join an elite group of fifty-five other schools, colleges, and universities nationwide that hold certification though the ADDA.

The ADDA is the oldest certification organization for drafting in the United States established in 1948.  This certification is industry recognized nationwide and will assist our graduates in securing employment.

Program Description

The MATC Dental Hygiene Program prepares its graduates to become members of a dental health team dedicated to helping individuals maintain oral health and prevent disease. The Dental Hygienist is qualified by education and licensure to provide direct patient care prescribed by the dentist, including removing deposits and stains from the teeth, exposing and developing dental radiographs, and performing various other preventive and therapeutic services related to oral health care. The Dental Hygienist educates individuals and groups of patients in proper preventive measures and explains the relationship between oral health and overall health.

The A.A.S degree program will prepare graduates to take the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination (NBDHE), the regional clinical exams, and state exams required to obtain licensure to practice.

Program Highlights: The dental hygiene program includes general education and technical education directly related to the sciences of dental and dental hygiene that are necessary for the profession. Training will include classroom and clinical experiences that have an emphasis on professionalism, public health, and treatment of a variety of patients.

Program Mission

The Electric Power & Distribution program enhances students’ knowledge and technical skills required to succeed in the electrical distribution industry. Graduates of the Electric Power & Distribution (EPD) program will be able to successfully install, maintain, and operate electrical systems to supply electrical energy to residential, commercial, and industrial customers and to join gas and electrical underground generation facilities.

Program Description

The EP&D Program provides the training needed to construct, operate, and maintain power line equipment. This program is one of only a handful in the U.S. that has open admission to the public. Students must be 18 years old prior to their summer internship. They must also be eligible to obtain a Class A Commercial Drivers License (drug free with no DUI convictions), and be willing to climb poles, work in high places, and lift objects heavier than 50 pounds. They must also be in good health and able to work in inclement weather at all hours of the day.

Program Description

Information and Network Technology is focused on the design, implementation, and configuration of network servers, computer networks and network infrastructure, and their integration into a comprehensive computing system. Both hardware and software aspects are covered. Specific topics include computer communication protocols, computer network analysis, reliability, security, fault tolerance, operating systems, computer and network hardware and asset management.

Successful Network Technicians must be adaptable, self-learners with good spatial, logical, and organizational skills. Strong math skills are not required but do generally indicate the individual's problem-solving ability.

Fall 2014--The CRT 120 and 125 class worked together to build a computer from scratch. They chose all of the components themselves based on what we learned in class as well as tribal knowledge. There were four teams all tasked with separate components. Each team had to make decisions on the parts they chose based on what the other teams chose, regarding the motherboard and processor, pc case size and of course, cost. What they ended up with was an eight core processor, 8 gigabytes of ram/memory a 240 gigabyte solid state hard drive, a dvd drive as well as a new and powerful graphics card. All this was housed in a quite lovely computer case and powered with a 750 watt power supply. 

The computer worked first time starting and the students ran Ubuntu from a usb drive and played a game from Steam. Very exciting!

Program Description

MLT's prepare and analyze specimines of blood and body fluids using microscopes, analyzers and other sophisticated laboratory equipment and computerized instruments.  Lab technicians usually work under the supervision of medical and clinical laboratory technologists.

The Medical Laboratory Technician program is an 11 month blended program.  Lectures are held in an online format and the labs are face-to-face on campus.  Internships are set-up at regional hospitals and clinic laboratories.

MATC offers two types of nursing programs: Practical Nursing and Associate Degree Nursing (ADN). The Practical Nursing program is a 9-month program which prepares graduates to take the licensure exam to become an LPN. The ADN program bridges LPNs into a completion program that prepares graduates to take the licensure exam for Registered Nurses.


Potential students wanting to study for Professional Nursing (RN) but without a Practical Nursing license must complete both programs. MATC Practical Nursing graduates may become eligible to articulate directly into the second level (ADN) by meeting certain criteria including a 3.0 GPA within the Practical Nursing program, and prior completion of all ADN prerequisites. The mission of the Welding Technology program is to assist and prepare students for gainful employment in and to advance the science and technology of the welding industry. Learning is enhanced with industry-based training.

Program Description

The Welding Program provides the training needed for those who desire to enter and advance in the welding field. The courses will also be useful to an individual who has already entered the welding occupation to upgrade himself/herself in welding skills and knowledge. The specific objective of this department is to train the student to perform welding operations and acquire the technical skill for each process and each application of oxyacetylene cutting, shielded Arc welding, and MIG and TIG welding.

 Academic Honesty Policy


Academic honesty at the Manhattan Area Technical College (MATC) is an important part of student success.  MATC views academic honesty as an integral part of student development and learning.  All MATC students are expected to understand the college’s policy on academic honesty, as well as, how the college defines academic dishonesty.

Academic dishonesty is any action taken by a student which violates the college’s policy on academic honesty.  MATC defines academic dishonesty as the following:


  • Giving or receiving unauthorized help on an individual or group assignment, paper, or exam
  • Reusing an assignment written for another course without proper authorization
  • Taking an exam for another student or having another student take an exam for you
  • Using unauthorized material on an exam
  • Altering or fabricating academic data, records, or documents with the use of conventional or electronic devices


  • Using others’ ideas and/or words without correctly acknowledging the source of that information
  • Copying someone else’s copyrighted material without written permission of the copyright owners
  • Taking credit for an assignment or research project done by another student
  • Doing work or research for another student


Consequences for students in violation of the MATC Academic Honesty Policy will be at the discretion of faculty and/or administration.  Consequences include but are not limited to:

  • Warning issued with no academic consequences
  • Oral or written reprimand with no academic consequences
  • An “F” or zero points given for the assignment, paper, or exam
  • An “F” or zero points given for the course
  • Removal from the course and/or program
  • Expulsion from the college


Any student accused of academic dishonesty may request written confirmation of the violation and consequence(s).  If a claim of academic dishonesty is in dispute then all parties involved will have the opportunity to appear before a 3 person independent college review panel.  The review panel make-up will include the Vice President of Student Services, the Vice President of Instructional Services, and the Chair of the Faculty Senate.  The review panel will have final ruling in such cases.

    MATC offers tutoring in the Learning Resource Center (LRC).  The LRC is located in room 105 of the main building.

  • Is tutoring free?

    Yes.  Tutoring is a free service offered to all MATC students.

  • How should I prepare for a tutoring session?

    In order for your tutoring session to be as productive as possible remember to do the follow:

    • Make sure that you attend class
    • Bring your assignments
    • Bring your textbook for the class you need assistance with
    • It is also helpful to have reviewed the text material and notes 
  • Is the LRC tutoring a substitute for going to class?

    No.  New material should be learned in class.  Students need to speak with their instructors regarding make-up work.

  • I can get the answers from the tutor, right?

    No.  The tutor is not an “answer machine,” and will not do your homework for you.

  • Do I need to make an appointment?

    It is not always necessary to make an appointment.  If you know that you are going to need assistance with a particular class or assignment then please feel free to make an appointment.  Walk-ins are always welcome, but remember you may have to wait a short period of time if the tutor is assisting someone else.


What is a Study Group?

A study group is a small group of students, usually between 4 - 7 people, enrolled in the same class.  This type of group meets periodically throughout the semester to review and discuss class material and coursework.  Study groups allow students to engage in a process called active learning.  Students engage with each other and pool their knowledge.  Group members also offer encouragement and support to one another. 

Start by identifying a specific need.  Next, try to identify other serious, dedicated students in class.  This can include students who come to all class meetings, take notes, submit homework on time, and ask questions.  Keep in mind, a study group is not a social club. 

For a study group to run smoothly it is best to appoint a group leader.  This student helps fellow group members organize their thoughts, suggest study methods, and insures all students have an opportunity to ask questions or explain ideas.  The group leader acts as a guide, but does not control the discussions.  During group sessions each student is the “expert” and explains information to the other students.  Group members can create mock exams, construct and solve problems, exchange notes, work on assignments, and prepare for exams together.

Forming a Study Group

If you need help getting a study group started contact the Learning Resource Center (LRC).  Send an email to or stop by the LRC which is in room 105 of the MATC main building.  Once your group has discussed when they want to meet you should contact the LRC faculty and staff to assist with room scheduling and to provide additional learning tools you might need. 

You may want to ask your instructor for suggestions about group activities and topics.  Ask your instructor to make an announcement in class letting other students know that you are forming a study group.  Identify a time that you all can meet to discuss group goals, meeting times and expectations for the study group.

Tips for a Successful Study Group 

  • Set topics at the beginning of each meeting to avoid wasting time
  • Select a group leader who is calm, reliable and open to suggestions
  • Start each session by comparing lecture notes to make sure you all heard the same thing
  • Encourage everyone to participate
  • Be patience, but keep in mind that all of you will learn more if everyone has something to share
  • Invite new students to join you, even after the group has formed
  • Spend 15-20 minutes discussing specific topics, allow all group members to share their ideas, and do not let one or two people monopolize the conversation
  • Test each other on the concepts, pose open-ended questions, and take turns answering them
  • Encourage each other to solve problems to reinforce their understanding
  • Sessions are most productive when individual members have worked independently on a problem beforehand and come together to share and discuss the solution
  • Group leadership can be rotated so that no one person bears a disproportionate amount of the work
  • Study groups are not substitute for attending lecture labs

Preparing for a Study Group Session 

  • Whenever possible, plan your study group time within 24 hours after a class meeting so that information will be fresh in your mind
  • Re-read the textbook or lecture notes, and mark points that you do not understand for clarification with your study partners
  • Review your notes and highlight to emphasize main topics or ideas discussed during class
  • Develop a list of 5-7 in-depth “test” questions similar in scope to those typical of your instructor
  • Try to answer the questions yourself before sharing them with your study partners

Student peer tutors allow colleges to meet the needs of students within many academic disciplines.  Being a student peer tutor can help students build valuable communication skills, reinforce their own knowledge, and provide self-confidence needed in demanding labor markets. 

Currently the LRC employs one student peer tutor.  This position is funded by the Federal Work-Study Program.  For a student to be considered for this position they must qualify for the Federal Work-Study Program.

Test Proctoring Guidelines and Procedures for MATC Students

If an exam or quiz needs to be made up, or a student needs to take a retest, instructors have the option of using the Learning Resource Center (LRC).  Students may also wish to take exams and quizzes in the LRC outside of class.  The LRC can accommodate these situations.   Testing can be done in the Learning Resource Center only with an instructor’s approval.   

Responsibilities of the Instructor:   

  • Contact the LRC at, 785-320-4519, or in person detailing specifics of the test (i.e. time limit, open book/notes, calculator, etc.).
  • Provide all testing materials to the LRC prior to test (all materials will be locked and secured prior to implementation).
  • Inform the student that he/she should schedule a time in advance; however, the student may walk-in if necessary. 
 Responsibilities of the Student:   
  • Arrive at the scheduled time or during testing hours.
  • If the test is online, utilize a student workstation within plain view of the proctor.
  • Phones or other electronic devices are not permitted during a test. 
 Responsibilities of the LRC Faculty and Staff:  
  • Follow all instructions and details given by the instructor.
  • Remind students of the MATC Academic Honesty Policy.
  • Have students sign-in and sign-out.
  • Phones or other electronic devices are not permitted during a test.  Any violation of this should be addressed immediately and reported to the instructor of record.
  • Exams are not to be administered if the instructor has not contacted the LRC Coordinator.

The Learning Resource Center will serve as a testing center for students in distance or online learning courses.  For questions about getting your tests proctored at MATC contact Darren S.   • Proctoring fees per semester:

    • 1 test - $10
    • 2 tests - $20

Early Alert

The MATC Student Early Alert System is a faculty resource used to assist students, faculty, and support staff regarding a student's academic, advising, counseling, or personal needs.

COMPASS® is an adaptive web-based placement assessment test used for placement into MATC general education courses.  It specifically assesses student placement into general education math and writing courses. 


Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • COMPASS® assessments are untimed
  • COMPASS® assessments should be scheduled in advance
  • You will be supplied pencil, paper, and a calculator
  • Yes, you can retake any part of the COMPASS® assessments
  • Yes, there is a retesting fee
  • Your score report will be ready immediately after completion


MATC is happy to COMPASS® test you for another institution.  There is a $25 fee for COMPASS® assessments, payable prior to testing.

MATC is also a COMPASS® remote testing site.

  • Why should you cite your sources?

    Most instructors want to check your sources for currency and relevancy to your topic. In addition, anyone reading your paper can use your "Works Cited" or "References" page as a starting point for their own research.

  • What do you need to include in a citation?

    Your list of references ought to have all the information required for your reader to locate the sources on his or her own. At the very least you should try to include, if available:

    • Author
    • Title (for articles include the article title and periodical title)
    • Publication information (place, publisher, date)
    • Page numbers
    • URL of the Web page, if it is an electronic resource
  • How to list citations in a "Works Cited" page

    Citations are usually written according to a bibliographic style.

    Two of the most common styles and the courses they are used for are:

    • MLA style -- for English Composition and Humanities classes
    • APA style -- for Psychology and Science classes
  • Web sites to help you write citations

Transfer grades do not become part of your MATC grade point average.

A grade of "C" or better is required for transfer to MATC.

An MATC counselor is available on a walk-in basis or by appointment to assist students with career, academic, or personal interests and concerns. If there is a need to share information in student records, the student will first be consulted and asked to sign a form authorizing transfer of the information. The form specifies both the information to be released, as well as to whom and by whom it is to be released. The student may revoke the permission by giving written notice at any time.
